Autism Awareness in Alabama

In honor of World Autism Day.... our first blog post!

According to the CDC, for approximately every 3 children identified nationally with autism spectrum disorders (1 in 68 children), only 1 child is diagnosed in Alabama (1 in 175 children). Do Autism Spectrum Disorders really exist at a lower rate in Alabama than in the rest of the country? Absolutely not, or we would have researchers trying to identify why the prevalence is so low! This means that we need to do a better job at early identification and making sure that those professionals that identify and diagnose developmental disabilities understand autism spectrum disorders.
